DPF repair is rarely about the filter alone. That's why aftertreatment repair starts by finding the reason the system is unhappy. Neuman Truck Service diagnoses and repairs diesel particulate filters, SCR and DEF systems, NOx sensors, EGR components and exhaust leaks. We do it on site, at your yard or on the shoulder. A truck stuck in derate or flashing a regen lamp usually has a sensor, a heater, a doser or a leak behind it. We can fix a lot of that without moving the truck.

Modern aftertreatment is a chain. The DOC lights off and heats the exhaust, and the DPF traps soot. The DEF doser sprays urea ahead of the SCR catalyst, and NOx sensors on both ends grade the result. When one link fails, the engine computer protects itself by cutting power. Every job starts with an estimate before work begins, and a 12-month warranty backs it. We answer the phone 24/7.

Aftertreatment Components We Repair On-Site

The parts below cause most of the aftertreatment codes and derates we see on heavy trucks.

  • DPF pressure sensor and lines: A cracked or plugged differential pressure hose makes the computer think the filter is full or missing. It's one of the cheapest fixes in the system.
  • NOx sensors: Inlet and outlet NOx sensors fail outright or drift, and that sets SCR efficiency codes and derates.
  • DEF doser: Crystallized or clogged DEF dosing valves spray poorly or not at all. We clean or replace them, then check them with a dosing test.
  • DEF pump, heater and lines: Supply modules, heated lines, tank heaters and DEF filters fail in the cold and leave the system unable to thaw or pressurize.
  • DEF quality and level sensors: We use a refractometer to tell a bad tank sensor reading from genuinely contaminated DEF. That happens before anyone throws parts at it.
  • EGR valve and cooler: We repair sticking EGR valves, failed actuators and leaking EGR coolers that lose coolant or cause white smoke.
  • Exhaust temperature sensors: Failed EGT sensors keep a regen from starting or finishing.
  • Hydrocarbon doser: Some engines use this aftertreatment fuel injector to heat the DOC during active regens. It can clog with carbon.
  • Exhaust leaks and pipes: Leaking V-band clamps, cracked flex pipes, blown manifold gaskets and rusted pipe sections skew sensor readings and fill the cab with fumes.

How DPF Repair and Aftertreatment Diagnostics Work

The work starts with codes and data, and parts come later. The mechanic connects a diagnostic laptop and reads aftertreatment faults along with live data. That data includes DPF differential pressure, inlet and outlet temperatures, NOx readings before and after the SCR, DEF pressure and dosing rates. Watching those numbers during a parked regen shows where the chain is breaking.

From there, targeted tests confirm the failure. A DEF dosing test into a measuring container shows whether the doser and pump deliver the right amount. A refractometer reading tells you whether the DEF itself is good. Smoke or soapy water finds exhaust and boost leaks. Once we know the cause, you get an estimate for the repair. After the fix, a verification regen or road test confirms the truck leaves out of derate.

Soot vs. Ash: What a Regen Can and Can't Fix

Soot burns. During a regen, exhaust temperatures climb high enough to turn trapped soot into gas. If the truck never got hot enough on its own, soot can load the filter. A parked regen on site can clear it. That's common on trucks that idle a lot or run short hops.

Ash doesn't burn. It comes from the additives in engine oil and collects in the filter over time, no matter how many regens the truck does. If a DPF is packed with ash, cracked, or melted from an uncontrolled regen, someone has to remove it for cleaning or replace it. In that case, you'll get the diagnosis and the honest options. We also fix any upstream cause, like a leaking injector or a turbo problem, so the new filter doesn't go the same way. Our diesel engine repair page covers the engine side.

Salt, Cold and Aftertreatment Systems in Minnesota

Aftertreatment hardware hangs under the truck in the worst spot for a Minnesota winter. Highway crews spread salt and salt brine all season. MnDOT's own salt sustainability program includes training on brine making and truck washing. That brine wicks into NOx sensor connectors, DEF heater plugs and temperature sensor pigtails. Corroded pins cause many of the intermittent codes that appear in spring. Wiring fixes in those spots overlap with truck electrical repair.

Cold adds its own trouble. DEF freezes in hard cold, so the system relies on tank and line heaters to thaw it. A failed heater means a DEF warning and eventually a derate. Trucks that idle for long periods to keep the cab warm also load their DPFs faster. Stop-and-go metro work around Minneapolis on I-94 and I-694 is hard on aftertreatment for the same reason. Long highway runs up I-35 past North Branch give the system the heat it needs to clean itself.

Keeping the System Healthy Between Repairs

A few habits reduce aftertreatment trouble. Keep DEF clean and sealed, since contaminated DEF can ruin a doser and an SCR catalyst. Don't ignore a regen request. Let the truck finish an active regen, or do a parked one when the dash asks. Fix exhaust and boost leaks quickly, because they skew sensor readings. Track oil consumption too, since an engine that burns oil fills the DPF with ash faster.

Regular fleet maintenance is the time to replace DEF filters, inspect sensor wiring for corrosion, and check the DPF pressure hoses for cracks. If a derate hits anyway, it's an emergency truck repair call, and we handle it day or night.

How Much Does DPF and Aftertreatment Repair Cost?

The cost of aftertreatment repair depends on what failed and the parts or special equipment the repair requires. A cracked pressure hose and a NOx sensor are worlds apart from a DPF or SCR replacement in parts cost. Diagnostic time counts heavily here, since many aftertreatment faults are intermittent. Travel and after-hours timing affect the total as well.

Before any work begins you get an estimate, so you know the expected cost up front. All repairs carry a 12-month warranty, and you can pay by credit or debit card.

  • Called in with a tire emergency and got Ryan on the phone — genuinely great experience. He was insightful, patient, and gave excellent customer service, even though we ended up not using them for the repair. You can tell they run a friendly, helpful shop. Would definitely call them again next time we're in a bind.

Aftertreatment & DPF Repair FAQs

Questions

Fresh weld on a stainless truck exhaust pipe
  • Can you do a forced regen on site?

Yes. We can run a parked regen with a diagnostic laptop wherever the truck sits in a safe spot. Watching the temperatures and pressures during the regen also helps confirm what's wrong.

  • Do you clean DPF filters?

Filter cleaning happens off the truck, with dedicated equipment. A mobile mechanic confirms whether the filter is really loaded with ash or damaged and fixes whatever caused it. Then we explain your cleaning or replacement options.

  • Why do I get a DEF warning in winter?

Usually it's a heater problem. DEF freezes in hard cold. If a tank heater, line heater or its wiring fails, the system can't thaw the fluid and flags a fault. Corroded connectors from road salt are a frequent cause.

  • What happens if I keep driving in derate?

The truck will usually keep reducing power. Some systems limit speed severely after a set time or distance. It's safer and often cheaper to have a mechanic diagnose the fault before it reaches that point.

  • Is a NOx sensor code always a bad sensor?

No. A failed sensor can set a NOx code. So can a DEF dosing problem, bad DEF, an exhaust leak or a worn SCR catalyst. If you test before you replace, you save money on expensive sensors.
