Semi truck repair is mostly about keeping the tractor legal, safe and pulling. Most of that work doesn't need a building around it. Neuman Truck Service brings a mobile semi mechanic to owner-operators and fleets across east-central Minnesota, the Twin Cities and northwest Wisconsin. Day cabs, sleepers, heavy-haul tractors and dump-hauling units all get the same approach. We find the actual fault, fix it right where the truck is, and test it before we call the job done.
Tractors fail in predictable places. Fifth wheels wear and stop locking cleanly, and compressors and governors lose their timing. Steering linkage loosens after a few seasons of potholes. Cooling systems leak at hoses and at the boots on the charge air cooler. Each of those can sideline a truck or earn a violation at the scale. You get an estimate before work begins and a 12-month warranty on every repair, with service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Tractor Systems We Repair On-Site
These are the components on a semi tractor that most often need a mechanic between scheduled services.
- Fifth wheel jaws and locks: We repair worn jaws, sticking release handles, broken slide locks and dry plates. Those cause hard coupling or a lock that won't fully close.
- Compressor and governor: We fix slow air build-up and governors that cut in and cut out at the wrong pressure. We also handle frozen or carbon-packed compressor discharge lines.
- Tractor protection valve: We fix a valve that won't hold trailer supply air, or won't let the trailer brakes apply when the line is pulled.
- Steering linkage: We fix loose tie rod ends, drag link wear and a leaking power steering gear or hoses. On the highway, these problems feel like wander and a vague wheel.
- Charge air cooler boots and clamps: Split boots and loose clamps leak boost, cost power and set intake pressure codes.
- Radiator and coolant leaks: We find and repair weeping radiators, failed hoses, leaking surge tank caps and water pump seepage before the engine overheats.
- Lights, mirrors and cab items: Headlights, markers, mirror heads, wipers and door latches seem minor until they appear on an inspection report.
Semi Truck Repair for Every Make on the Road
The Class 8 tractors that run this region come from a handful of builders: Freightliner, Peterbilt, Kenworth, Volvo, Mack and International. Each has its own wiring layouts, fifth wheel and air system choices, and quirks a mechanic learns by working on them. A diagnostic laptop connects to the engine and chassis modules. The rest is experience with how these trucks wear in Minnesota service.
Mixed fleets are common, and a service truck doesn't care whose badge is on the hood. The same visit can cover a slack adjuster on one unit and a cab heater blower on another. It can also cover a leaking hub seal on the steer axle of a third. For U-joints, carrier bearings and other jobs under the tractor, see driveline repair. For torque rods, leaf springs and air bags, see truck suspension repair.
What Happens When a Semi Needs Work
Call and describe what the truck is doing. Is it a noise, a leak, a warning light, a pull to one side, a fifth wheel that didn't lock on the last hook? The more specific the description, the more likely the right part is already on board when the mechanic arrives. If the truck is in a yard, tell us where it sits and whether we can get the keys after hours.
On site, the mechanic confirms the problem, explains it in plain terms and gives you an estimate before any wrench turns. Sometimes the mechanic finds something else during the repair, like a cracked air line next to the leaking fitting. You hear about it and decide whether to add it. That way the mechanic does nothing to the truck without your say.
Fixing Roadside Inspection Write-Ups
The Minnesota State Patrol's Commercial Vehicle Section inspects trucks at weigh stations and other roadside locations. The inspectors check vehicle equipment along with driver qualifications and hours. The Patrol submits those inspection reports to the FMCSA, so violations follow a carrier's safety record.
When an inspection finds a defect, a quick, documented repair matters. Brake adjustment, air leaks, lighting, tires and steering components are the usual write-ups, and most are repairable on site. Our mechanics are qualified to do Minnesota and federal safety inspections. They can also inspect a tractor before it returns to the road. Read more on our DOT inspections page.
Tractors Built for Minnesota Roads and Rules
Freight in this region rides I-35 between Duluth and the metro. In the metro, I-35 splits into I-35E through St. Paul and I-35W through Minneapolis. From there, freight moves onto I-94 and the I-694 and I-494 loops. Up north, tractors run long, cold miles past Moose Lake on the way to Duluth and the Iron Range. That mix of stop-and-go metro traffic and long rural runs is hard on steering parts, cooling systems and fifth wheels.
Minnesota's trucking rules add their own layer: weight limits, permits and equipment standards. MnDOT's Commercial Vehicle Operations office publishes the Minnesota Commercial Vehicle Resource Book for carriers and drivers. A mechanically sound tractor has a much easier time staying on the right side of those rules. A working cab heater matters too when it's below zero (our truck A/C repair page covers cab climate).
How Much Does Semi Truck Repair Cost?
Semi repair cost depends on the job itself and the parts or special equipment it needs. Parts for a fifth wheel rebuild, a compressor or a steering gear cost far more than a set of hose clamps. Travel and after-hours timing also count. So does any diagnostic time on an intermittent fault.
You'll see an estimate before any work begins, so you know the expected cost up front. Every repair carries a 12-month warranty, and you can pay by credit or debit card.

Feedback
Called in with a tire emergency and got Ryan on the phone — genuinely great experience. He was insightful, patient, and gave excellent customer service, even though we ended up not using them for the repair. You can tell they run a friendly, helpful shop. Would definitely call them again next time we're in a bind.

Semi Truck Repair FAQs
Questions

Which semi truck makes do you work on?
We work on all the common Class 8 makes: Freightliner, Peterbilt, Kenworth, Volvo, Mack and International. We can handle a mixed fleet in a single visit.
Do you work on owner-operator trucks or only fleets?
Both. A single owner-operator with one tractor gets the same service as a fleet with a yard full of units. Either way, we answer the call 24/7.
Can you fix a fifth wheel that won't lock?
Usually, yes. Most lock problems come from worn jaws, a misadjusted lock, a sticking release handle or a dry plate. We can adjust, lubricate or rebuild those on site.
Can you repair defects from a roadside inspection?
Yes. We can typically repair brake, air, lighting, tire and steering write-ups where the truck sits. We document the repair so you have a record of the fix.
Is there anything on a semi you can't fix roadside?
Yes, some heavy jobs. Major engine teardowns and transmission rebuilds need a facility with a lift. We diagnose those and explain them so you can decide where the truck goes next.
